Throw away trash and get compost back
06/18/2019

The effectiveness of Tien Ngoc Company’s compost bins is highly appreciated by people because they can store garbage for a long time, create fertilizer for plants, and protect the environment.

Tien Ngoc Trading and Production Company Limited has just brought compost bins to hundreds of households in Dong Nai, Long An, Khanh Hoa provinces… for trial use. This particularly convenient product was immediately enthusiastically received by people, especially those in rural areas.

Too many utilities

Up to now, people have the habit of using conventional trash cans, which are quite inconvenient for garbage collection and poor hygiene. Meanwhile, using Tien Ngoc compost trash cans brings many benefits such as reducing garbage discharge into the environment and reducing garbage disposal time (1 week or 1 month to dispose of garbage once). In particular, people have clean compost to fertilize plants.

We took a field trip to Nhon Trach district, Dong Nai province to learn about the effectiveness of this product. Ms. Le Thi Thuong, an official of the People’s Committee of Phuoc An commune (Nhon Trach district), said that she was a pioneer in using compost bins. “I heard that using this compost bin can both hold a lot of trash and provide fertilizer for trees, protecting the environment, so I was very interested, received it and used it immediately, and in fact, the efficiency is quite high.” Ms. Thuong’s family has 5 people. When having a compost bin, everyone in the family must practice the habit of sorting trash. Every time they throw trash, plastic bags, non-degradable substances are put into the inorganic trash bin, while green vegetables, fruit peels, leftover food such as fish heads, fish intestines (organic) are put into the compost bin. She said: “At first, sorting trash was a bit difficult, but after 4 months, the habit of sorting trash at home has formed, every member of the family can sort trash themselves. After a few months, I got some compost from those leftovers to fertilize my vegetables.”

Mr. Tran Quoc Ninh’s house is in a deep alley in Ba Truong hamlet, Phuoc An commune. Before, every time he went to take out the trash, his family had to carry the trash a long way to the garbage truck’s collection point. Since using the compost bin, he only takes out the trash once a month and after 4 months of use, he has collected about 3 kg of compost. “To use a compost bin, you need to follow the instructions, install it in a suitable location, limit rainwater, only put in organic waste, first add a little sawdust or dry leaves to help the waste in the bin dry, decompose easily, and not generate odor. Every 3-5 days, you can dilute the wastewater with 10 times the water to water the plants, it is very simple to use but effective” – Mr. Ninh shared his experience.

Products for the environment

Mr. Truong Anh Tuyen, CEO of Tien Ngoc Company, said that the company specializes in manufacturing public trash cans, supplying Ho Chi Minh City and the southern provinces and cities. In 2014, Tien Ngoc Company switched to researching trash cans that recycle organic matter into compost.

According to Mr. Tuyen, the current cost of compost bins is higher than that of regular bins because they are produced in small quantities and use composite materials. However, if a large order is received, the cost of compost bins will be much cheaper, equivalent to that of regular bins.

Having worked in the environmental industry for over 10 years, Mr. Tuyen is very passionate about the compost bin product that the company has successfully researched and manufactured. This is a model that has been successfully applied in many developed countries. According to Tien Ngoc Company’s calculations, using compost bins instead of regular bins will reduce about 40% of household waste.

It is known that the composition of waste in Vietnam today is about 80% organic waste, most of which is landfilled. Meanwhile, organic waste can be recycled into compost. Compost bins are one of the solutions to help people recycle organic waste into compost, significantly reducing waste collection costs, saving transportation costs, waste treatment, saving land for landfills, saving water resources… In particular, this is an environmentally friendly product, creating free nutrients for the soil through the use of natural fertilizers and reducing the use of chemical fertilizers.

Bringing compost bins to the countryside

It is known that in the past time, Tien Ngoc Company has brought compost bins to local people for trial use and received good feedback. Compared to the compost bins with holes that people in the Mekong Delta used before, Tien Ngoc compost bins have overcome the disadvantages: no bad smell, no water leakage… Tien Ngoc Company’s goal is to bring compost bins to rural areas, especially in the Mekong Delta provinces to help farmers use them to get fertilizer for their plants, limit waste to the environment, contribute to making the environment green, clean and beautiful.
